In the 1980s a new name, "The Graphic Novel," was coined for this burgeoning genre. This course will focus on some of the recent classics in this genre, including several graphic memoirs that bear witness to historical events. Some of the "comics" we will read include Maus I and II by Art Spiegelman, Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel, and Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi In addition, we will read texts that interrogate the "architecture" of the comic form. These will include Building Stories, by Chris Ware, In the Shadow of No Towers, by Art Spiegelman, and Here, by Richard McGuire. Students will also read current criticism and theory as they examine how images and text work together to inform our interpretations of graphic narratives.
